When you live in an area of the country that can experience hurricanes and hurricane-type winds, it is important that you are ready for anything that Mother Nature throws at you. A hurricane is a force of nature that can cause a great deal of damage, but that damage can be mitigated if you are prepared with the right equipment for your home. One very important part of your home that should be reinforced are the windows. If you think about the weakest parts of your home, your windows will be the first thing to come to mind. Here are a few things to think about when it comes the windows in your home. 

Window Type

One of the first thing that you should know is there are multiple types of hurricane windows. The most common that people choose is the polyvinyl butyral. The material is very popular because it absorbs a great deal energy when impacted. Another great material is resin laminate. This is where a liquid resin is poured between two glass layers, and the resin is allowed to cure. These different windows provide more safety than regular windows.

A window that shatters can cause a great deal of damage to your home, but more importantly it is very dangerous to you and your family. One of the most important aspects of hurricane windows is they resist shattering. If the window does actually break, the pieces of glass will not shard and shatter into tiny sharp pieces, but instead they will break into larger pieces that have a much more dull edge. Because of their construction, the windows provide a great deal of insulation from sound and heat. The construction of the window also allows for the window to block up to 99% of the ultraviolet rays that hit the window.

If you live in an area that experiences hurricanes, tornadoes, and high winds, you most likely have to pay high premiums on your insurance. The insurance company looks at your home as a risk to insure because Mother Nature is always throwing disasters your way. Installing hurricane windows will allow the insurance company to know you are doing something about the problem, and your home becomes less of a risk.
